4 CLARINETS! 4 CAMERA O.P.E.R.A.T.O.R.S! 1 DREAM!

In a world where busy people go about their daily lives - where, to many, art is taken for granted - four clarinetists set out on one of the most exciting challenges of all time. Playing the German national anthem (Haydn's Emperor Song) in four separate elevators!

As dumb as the idea may sound, it's amazing how deep the concept is. Think about it, four clarinets, that were used to practising in the same rehearsal space, are now isolated from each other and forced to play one piece. They must use whatever they have to get through 11minutes of music.

The result? You'll see this installment during ASO (located somewhere in the meeting place)

Notes: It was a great experience, we freaked out, entertained and puzzled a lot of people. Some entered the elevator, some stayed to enjoy it and some backed off. Kris, Lisa, Angela and Melvin stayed focused, however, but let's see how well they did...

Fall Apart Again

Hey guys, here's another really cool stop motion video. It's the music video for Peter Elkas' song Fall Apart Again. It was directed by Jonathan Bensimon and made completely out of photographs.

Asad's Adventures in Cardboard (issue 5)

Being an enthusiast of cardboard and all recycled pulp materials, I was helping Carmen from Shutterbugs build the cardboard trees for their 'FOREST OF TREES' exhibit.

1. I cut out the cardboard outlines for tree 2 first – which looked kind of cool

2. But off the bat, the major issue with using single sheet cardboard for the trees is that cardboard really folds and falls VERY easily.

The most annoying thing is that, even if you’re careful, the process of pulling the cardboard out of its cut out, bends the sheet! So we have to find a way to be careful.

3. So, to see what the tree would look like, standing, I made some stabilizers to hold it up:

4. The tree in and of its self, looks really neat; would work quite well and when 8 ft tall in the valley, would look really cool:

5. But it really falls down too easily:

Quick trivia:

"If a tree falls in the studio, and no one is there to hear it, will it make a sound?"
A: Asad will be in the studio.

Anyhow, the moral from this first experiment is:

DOUBLE SHEET THE CARDBOARD!!!!!

Otherwise it simply wont stand or hold any photographs (let alone lights)

Also, we have to be careful to ensure the two base parts match each other. Perhaps we'll have to stabilize them as well.

6. Tree 1, which we designed to be smaller, looks kinda cute:

But depending on how we want to use it, it may not have the most useful design for hanging photos:

Which brings me to:

DESIGN

Two things to consider here:

1. Branching:
I think the trees need to branch out a bit more, to provide an adequate 'cover' from which we can hang enough photos.

2. Overlaps:
In order to make sure that we can hang pictures on all the branches, we have to make sure, either the distance between the upper and lower branches is enough to hang photos on them, or make sure the branches are non overlapping.

Given our design is basically two halves with branches that are interlocked into each other, we have to take that into account when designing each half.

Hey everyone,

I was just writing to our graphic designer trying to describe, as an image, what I feel about ARTSIDEOUT - what I want it to be. And I want to share it with you:

THE VISION FOR ARTSIDEOUT

What we're trying to do with ASO is radically open up the entire arts community to the school and the community at large.

Why?

Because
a) the community needs to see what amazing work is done by its artists and,
b) artists need a greater space to work with - they need the whole school - the whole community, hell the whole world to be their toy, their space - their interface.

They need to be able to touch as much of the world as they can.

ASO is really, our humble attempt to give artists something that is so often hard to get in the outside world: space and the freedom to use it.

In terms of space, ASO is an explosion of light and color - of space touched by creativity and transformed by brilliance. And despite all the rules us organizers have to negotiate with to make this happen, in our heart of hearts, ASO is freedom and chaos and beauty - it is not being limited by rules - it is NOT STAYING IN 'YOUR PLACE'.

Its touching grey buildings and filling them with color. It is filling old quiet hallways with music and sound. It is the ability to touch and change anything your heart desires.

It is a chance to transform and transcend.

All you have to do, is attend.

Hey everyone! Thank you for signing up for ASO blog. I know - it kinda looks hideous. SO! Feel free to edit it - change the color, the header, the font, the style etc. There are only two rules for channging stuff:
